What I’ve Learned Managing Construction Projects
A Construction Project Manager’s job role is often summarised as managing stakeholders, site logistics, cost, and quality. While correct, that does not fully capture my personal experience in the role, and the services I provide. For me, project management in construction is about accountability, leadership, and delivering certainty in complex, high-risk environments.
Through my work at Hatham R Construction, I have led projects in live aerospace manufacturing facilities, industrial redevelopments, and technically demanding refurbishments. As Project Manager, I was the pivotal point of trust, responsible aligning deliverables with client expectations. I also coordinated multidisciplinary teams, ensuring safe delivery of each project within budget.
Strong projects are built long before breaking ground on site. Early planning, a robust procurement strategy, and proactive risk management, in my experience, directly influences the ease of implementing safe methodologies on site, and contributes to positive commercial outcomes. When assessing a potential project, I can tell whether there has been an appropriate amount of preparation prior to start-on-site, based on the number of RFI’s, late design changes needed and scope gaps.
Once I am on site, leadership is paramount. Managing multiple subcontractors, balancing productivity with quality, while maintaining health and safety standards requires technical expertise, integrity, and respect for every discipline. Leadership is not just leading from the front, it is also recognising the skillset and specialisations of those around you, while having the humility to ask the ‘stupid’ questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question. I live by motto that ‘every day is a school day.’ I have learned from every project I delivered and every trade I managed. I take pride in creating efficient, organised, and safe sites where teams understand expectations, feel accountable for delivery and invested in the projects’ success.
What ultimately defines the role for me is ownership. As a Project Manager, I take responsibility for outcomes and ensure lessons learned are carried forward. Construction demands collaboration, adaptability, and integrity, and I am continually motivated by the positive feedback I receive when handover is achieved.
